DEVents evolved in response to a changing climate and an increased need for exchange in the world of research into international development issues. Three issues struck us as relevant:
1. The increasing demand on the part of research funders to have the research they pay for communicated to those who can use it or are in a position to effect change (practitioners and policy makers essentially).
2. The oft repeated cries of, 'but we’re researchers – we just want to research', or 'we are a small team and don’t have the capacity to communicate'.
3. The Department for International Development stipulating that 30% of the research it funds between 2008 and 2013 must be spent on communication. Smaller research teams, or those that lack in-house expertise, could lose out.
